What is a liquid lunch?
In my last post I described some terms for types of lunches you might eat at work. While we’re on the subject of lunches, here’s a good question: what is a liquid lunch?

A liquid lunch is a relatively commonly used slang phrase in the English language. A lot of people will say they are having a liquid lunch when, instead of eating salads, sandwiches or hamburgers, they do nothing but drink beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverages for lunch!
People don’t tend to have a liquid lunch in a business setting… if you’re working, it is generally frowned upon to drink alcoholic beverages during your lunch hour (though if you’re going out to a special celebratory lunch it might be okay to have a drink with your meal). Usually it is college students, workers with the afternoon off, or people with alcohol problems who might have a liquid lunch.
I must admit, I’m not a big fan of liquid lunches… having the occasional drink with your meal is one thing, but having nothing but alcoholic beverages for lunch is a little too much for me!
Tailgate

A tailgate is a place where you might have a liquid lunch! A tailgate is a party that takes place before going to see a sporting event (usually American football) in the parking lot of the stadium where the game is to take place. People will park their cars and bring out coolers full of beer and salty snacks, listen to music, and meet up with their friends before the game.
I’ve been to several tailgates in my life; two examples include a University of South Carolina Gamecocks college football game at the University of South Carolina, where I went to grad school, and a Jimmy Buffett concert in Charleston, South Carolina – though tailgates usually take place before football games, sometimes they also take place before music concerts!
Breakfast of champions

While we’re on the subject of liquid lunches, there is another term that you might hear in English: Breakfast of Champions. This term refers to people drinking alcoholic beverages for breakfast! This is not something that people do very often, though it’s been known to happen. Maybe during Spring Break, when college students get a week’s vacation from classes and head to the beach?
Hair of the dog that bit you

If you’re drinking beer at breakfast, you might be drinking the hair of the dog that bit you, often shortened to hair of the dog. This phrase is used when people have a hangover after having drunk too many alcoholic beverages the previous night. Hair of the dog that bit you means that if you drink more alcohol in the morning after you wake up, your hangover will go away. It’s generally not a very good idea to drink hair of the dog – it’s better to drink lots of water to help cure your hangover! I’ve also heard that a banana milkshake with honey is a healthy and tasty way to get rid of a hangover.

Hi there,
It really make sense to picture “liquid lunch” in our minds, when I looked at the title, I could have guessed the meaning easily.
You have created a really cool place for learning. For getting more fans, attach an audio version of each blog to it.
Keep going by the way, I love the website.
Thank you Hadi! I am indeed planning on including more audio and video on the site in the future – I appreciate the feedback. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions!
glad to see your quick respond; I do have suggestions of course;
Sounds a bit crazy but it’s really cool thing to do; Don’t you and English Guru (Mrs. Crawford) take at least 30 min a week to do new bloggings and stuffs? well you can come together and become one and take teaching to a whole new level. That’s only Real English materials, and more specificly I want you to go on the microphones and do a realistic dialoge and then talk about the slangs and vocabs.
Do some of them for free and then with something so-called VIP membership, do the lessons for only the paid members.
by the way I know a bit of mixing and designing. I can help you anytime if you want.
Thanks Hadi – that’s a great idea to work with Yvonne – she puts together some great posts, and quite frequently! I do plan to do some more videos and dialog – I got myself a Flip Cam HD a while back to do videos of the family and for my blog – but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Yvonne created a few for her English teaching blog but I don’t think she’s made one in a while either.
I appreciate your offer to help with sound mixing and designing as well. I have a MacBook Pro that is supposedly great for video editing, though I haven’t tried it yet. I have done some work with sound and music using Logic Studio, which I really like!
I do think that creating language dialogs for the site is a great idea – I will talk to Yvonne about that.
Thanks again!
Great idea Hadi. I think it would take everything to a whole new level!!
